Every two years, the EYE (European Youth Event) brings together thousands of young people from across the European Union and beyond, right at the heart of European democracy. The EYE presents a unique opportunity for youths aged between 16 to 30 years old to inspire and get inspired, to debate directly with Members of the European Parliament and other European decision-makers, and to exchange views with experts, activists, and content creators.
This year’s edition was no different. EYE2025, the sixth edition of this event, took place on 13 and 14 June 2025, offering an interactive and dynamic mix of activities, debates, workshops, visits, artistic performances and much more – both inside the European Parliament in Strasbourg and around the EYE Village.
The Maltese delegation on the trip was comprised of EPAS Junior Ambassadors Benjamin Borg, Cherise Sultana, Liam Spiteri, Celeste tan Panza and Giulia Bugeja, together.eu volunteers Jean Borg and Kyle Vella, local content creators Sasha Vella, Taryn Mamo Cefai and Monique Farrugia, and journalists Juliana Zammit from MaltaToday and Hayley Bonnici from FreeHour, accompanied by Odette Camilleri Bonett, the Youth Correspondent at the European Parliament Liaison Office in Valletta.
In spite of the sweltering heat, the group happily participated in events and debates taking place over the weekend, such as “Exploring Space - Innovation for Security & Sustainability”. They were very enthusiastic to learn more about the conference interpreters’ role in the
European Parliament during a meeting with Juan Carlos Jiménez Marín, the Director-General for Logistics and Interpretation for Conferences at the European Parliament, and Daniela Scerri, the Acting Head of Unit for Maltese Interpretation. In this meeting they heard about what career opportunities exist for young people with Maltese language skills in the European Parliament, and even had the opportunity to try interpreting first-hand in the interpreting booth!
Sasha Vella addressed a debate named “Platforms of power: how content creators spark political engagement”, alongside Maltese MEP Thomas Bajada, where she shared her own experiences in activism, namely in recent local campaigns.
The Maltese group also had the opportunity to meet and discuss with Glenn Micallef, European Commissioner for Intergenerational Fairness, Youth, Culture and Sport, who was happy to be present for the second time in the EYE, after attending it 10 years ago as a youth himself.
The EYE Village programme was coordinated by the European Youth Forum, with activities co-created by youth and civil society organisations, ensuring representation and a plurality of perspectives.
