Europe Day 2025, a celebration of 75 years of peace and unity

Students and youths were at the centre of activities marking Europe Day 2025 in Malta, as the continent celebrates the 75th anniversary from the Schuman Declaration.
As part of a programme of activities which took place at Freedom Square in Valletta, the European Parliament Liaison Office in Maltaheld the final round of the European Parliament Ambassador Schools Programme Quiz, where secondary and post-secondary students showcased their knowledge of the EU.
Sacred Heart College came out winners of the tight contest between the ten finalist secondary and post-secondary schools. Throughout the morning, the different information stands were visited by Prime Minister Robert Abela, European Commissioner Glenn Micallef, and MEP Peter Agius.
At the University of Malta, MEPs Alex Agius Saliba (S&D) and Peter Agius (EPP) participated in a debate organised together with JEF, the European Studies Organisation, and the Institute for European Studies. They took questions from those present and spoke about their priorities and parliamentary work in this past year. While forming part of different political groups, they shared the fact that their positions are primarily dictated also by what they deem good for Malta and its people. The debate took place within a 'European Village' set up in the Quadrangle at the University of Malta.
Dr Mario Sammut, Head of the European Parliament Office in Malta, spoke about the significance of celebrating the 9th of May: “It is important never to lose sight of the bigger picture and not to take for granted the Europe we live in today, with all its imperfections but united in peace. The vision of the EU’s founding fathers was an ambitious one and the European Parliament remains at the forefront of upholding the values that underpin the European project,” Dr Sammut said.
Earlier last week, a similar programme was organised together with Europe Direct Gozo at Villa Rundle Gardens in Victoria, Gozo . These activities were organised in conjunction with the European Commission Representation in Malta, SEM - Servizzi Ewropej f’Malta, and a number of other EU-related entities based in Malta.
