The Art of Activism

Between 18 and 25 March, JEF Malta in collaboration with the European Parliament Liaison Office in Malta and local partners, will launch the 2026 Democracy Under Pressure campaign, entitled The Art of Activism, bringing together young people to explore how creativity and civic engagement can strengthen democratic participation.

This week, JEF Malta in collaboration with  the European Parliament Liaison Office in Malta and local partners, will launch the 2026 Democracy Under Pressure campaign, entitled The Art of Activism, bringing together young people to explore how creativity and civic engagement can strengthen democratic participation.

Taking place between 18 and 25 March, the week-long campaign will feature a wide range of activities, including talks, workshops, interactive sessions and an art exhibition, all aimed at encouraging reflection on European values, inclusion and active citizenship.

The programme will open on 18 March with a JEF Talk titled “The Language of Democracy: Ensuring every voice is heard”, featuring Director-General for Translation at the European Parliament, Valter Mavrič, alongside the Commissioner for the Rights of Persons with Disability Rhoda Garland, Inclusivity Advocate Nicole Bartolo and Professor Ray Fabri, from the Institute of Linguistics & National Council for the Maltese Language. The discussion will focus on linguistic diversity, accessibility and the importance of ensuring that democratic processes remain inclusive and accessible to all.

Throughout the week, participants will also have the opportunity to engage with a Human Library, creative workshops and an art exhibition exploring democracy as a living and evolving process, highlighting how artistic expression can serve as a powerful tool for civic engagement.

On 23 March, a second JEF Talk entitled “Content Creation for Change: Is Digital Activism Enough?”  feature discussions on the role of content creation, media and digital platforms in shaping public discourse and driving social change.

The initiative forms part of a wider European campaign led by the Young European Federalists, aiming to raise awareness about the role of youth activism in upholding democratic values and encouraging greater participation in civic life.

Through initiatives such as The Art of Activism, the European Parliament Liaison Office in Malta continues to engage with young people, fostering dialogue and promoting a deeper understanding of democracy, participation and the European Union.
